Buy through a link here and the vendor pays this site a commission. Your price doesn't change. How that works.

Use Bitwarden. The free plan stores unlimited passwords on unlimited devices, and Premium is $19.80 a year, as of November 1, 2026.

For scale: 1Password charges $2.99 a month for your first 12 months on annual billing, then lists at $3.99 (checked Nov 1, 2026). That's $47.88 a year. You could pay Bitwarden for two years and have change left.

Bitwarden also names its auditors. Its help page lists 2025 third-party audits by Cure53, ETH Zurich, Unit 42 and Fracture Labs. 1Password's security page says it publishes independent audit results. Read both.

The one annoyance: no month-to-month plan appeared on Bitwarden's pricing page (checked Nov 1, 2026). It's $19.80 up front or nothing. Free sharing stops at one other user.

Now the cases where you should ignore all that.

You're buying for a family

Bitwarden still wins on price, and by more than you'd guess.

  • Bitwarden Families: 6 users, $47.88 a year.
  • Proton Pass Family: up to 6 users, $4.99 a month on 12-month billing, with $6.99 as the list price (checked Nov 1, 2026).
  • 1Password Families: 5 users, $4.49 a month on the promo, $5.99 at list.

Run 1Password at list and it's $71.88 a year for one fewer person than Bitwarden. Spot the funny part? Bitwarden's whole family plan costs exactly what 1Password charges one person at list: $47.88.

Why pay it, then? The Secret Key. 1Password protects accounts with a password plus a 128-bit Secret Key. If that's what you want, buy it knowing the promo price applies to new customers only.

You sign up for things with throwaway addresses

Get Proton Pass. Its free plan has unlimited logins, notes, cards and devices, plus passkey support and 10 hide-my-email aliases.

Pass Plus removes the alias cap and adds a built-in 2FA authenticator, vault sharing and Emergency Access. It's $2.99 a month billed at $35.88 per 12 months. Pay monthly and it's $4.99, the only confirmed month-to-month price in this list. Bitwarden Premium at $19.80 still undercuts it if aliases don't matter to you.

You don't want your vault on anyone's server

KeePassXC is free, and its source is open under GPLv3. Data stays local with no remote servers, encrypted with AES256 or Twofish. The project also says France's ANSSI awarded it a Security Visa.

Here's why people bother. LastPass said on Dec 22, 2022 that an attacker copied a backup of customer vault data, as SiliconANGLE reported that day. That's one company's incident, and it says nothing about Bitwarden or 1Password. It does show the kind of event a local file sidesteps.

You pay in chores. KeePassXC has no built-in sync, so the database goes in your own cloud folder, and that folder is now part of your security. It also lists Windows, Mac and Linux, where Bitwarden adds iOS, Android and the web.

You want a VPN thrown in

Dashlane is the only one here where security.org, updated Apr 17, 2026, says a VPN and dark web monitoring come with its paid plan. It also reports 256-bit AES and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Its price isn't confirmed yet, so I can't tell you how it compares with Bitwarden Premium. The free tier ended in September 2025, per the same page. If you already pay for Proton VPN or NordVPN, skip this.

You already pay Nord Security

NordPass comes from the same vendor as NordVPN. Security.org says it has a free forever plan with unlimited passwords, passkeys and cards, using zero-knowledge architecture with XChaCha20 encryption (checked Nov 1, 2026). Premium features open as a 30-day trial, no card needed.

Free drops multi-device login persistence, breach scanning and password health checks. Bitwarden's free plan has no such device problem.

Its USD price is unconfirmed: nordpass.com returned a 403, and the third-party listings I found disagree.
