Best project management tool for a team of five
Trello is the cheapest per seat and Basecamp is the only one with a flat-fee plan. For five people, the seat price decides it more than the feature list does.

| Product | Best for | Per month, yearly plan | The deciding fact, and the catch | Link |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trello | Best for simple boards | $5 | The lowest per-seat price of the five at the Standard tier. It does kanban boards well and little else, so the catch is what you bolt on later. | Visit |
| ClickUp | Best value for features | $9 | Tasks, docs and views in one tool on the Core plan, at a yearly per-user rate below Asana's Starter. The breadth takes setup time. | Visit |
| Asana | Best for cross-team tasks | $10.99 | The tidiest task tracking of the five, and the dearest per seat. The free Personal plan covers 2 users, so a team of five has to pay. | Visit |
| Basecamp | Best flat-fee option | $29 | Every paid plan is a flat monthly fee with a user cap, not a per-seat price. Freelancer covers up to 5 users; at five seats it costs more than Trello. | Visit |
Buy through a link here and the vendor pays this site a commission. Your price doesn't change. How that works.
Start with Trello. At $5 a user a month on Standard (checked November 1, 2026), it's the cheapest of the five, and a team of five rarely needs more than boards. Move up only when you can name the feature you're missing.
Everything else on this page is for when that sentence doesn't hold.
You want one tool for everything
ClickUp. The Core plan is $9 a user a month on yearly billing, below Asana's $10.99, per ClickUp's pricing page. The page also shows a regular price of 12 USD/mo and no monthly-billing rate. It folds tasks, docs and several views into one app, which is the pitch and also the complaint. Expect an afternoon of setup.
If you're deciding between it and Asana, Asana against ClickUp goes feature by feature. And Trello against ClickUp asks when boards are enough.
You want it tidy, and you'll pay for it
Asana is the most expensive per seat here: $10.99 a user a month on Starter with yearly billing, per Asana's pricing page, which shows $13.49 on monthly billing. The free Personal plan lets 2 users collaborate, with unlimited tasks and projects and a 100 MB limit per file.
What the money buys is tidiness: cross-team task tracking without much to configure. If that's your problem, it's the one to pay for. See where the Asana free plan stops.
You're allergic to per-seat bills
Basecamp is the odd one out: every paid plan is a flat monthly price per account, with a cap on users, per Basecamp's pricing page. Freelancer is $29 a month for up to 5 users and 3 active projects. Pro is $79 for up to 10 users, and Pro Plus is $99 for up to 15. Pro Unlimited is $199 a month billed yearly ($329 billed monthly) for unlimited users and 1 TB.
Do the sum. Five Trello seats at $5 each come to less than one Freelancer fee, and Freelancer already hits its 5-user cap. The flat plans are a bet on growth, not a deal for a team of five.
You think in boards and automations
monday.com's own page listed euros when I read it, and its price isn't confirmed yet. The automations people buy it for start at Standard, not Basic, and paid plans start from 3 users (the free plan covers up to 2 seats).
So the Basic tier won't give you the thing you came for. Plan on Standard.
A rule for choosing
Count the features you'd use every week. If it's boards, Trello. If it's boards plus docs, ClickUp. If it's task handoffs between groups, Asana. Software developers have different priorities and get their own list in project management for software teams.
Check each plan's renewal terms, and put the renewal date in a calendar the day you pay. Compare the rest in the project management catalog.
