How to set up Bitwarden for your family
A Bitwarden Families organization covers 6 people for $47.88 a year, and the setup is five steps in the web app. The catch is the invite that dies after five days.

Families is one organization with up to 6 users. You create it, you invite the others, and you decide what gets shared. Bitwarden's pricing page lists it at $47.88 a year, or $3.99 a month (checked Nov 1, 2026). A single Premium account is 1.65 USD/mo a month on the yearly plan.
Compare the free plan first. It has unlimited passwords and devices but shares with just one other user. That covers a couple. It doesn't cover a household.
1. Make your own account first
The organization hangs off a personal account, so start there. Bitwarden's help page for this runs: enter your email, pick a server (bitwarden.com in the US or bitwarden.eu in the EU), open the verification email, then set a master password and select Create account.
Pick the server carefully.
2. Turn on two-step login
Do this before you put 40 passwords in. In the web app, go to Settings, then Security, then Two-step login. Bitwarden's page says authenticator apps, FIDO2 hardware keys and email are free. Duo and YubiKey OTP need Premium.
You can enable more than one method. Read the separate recovery code article before you close the page.
3. Create the Families organization
In the web app, select New organization. Enter a name and billing email, choose Families, add payment details and submit. Per Bitwarden's organizations page, new Families organizations get a 14-day free trial and you can cancel from the Settings tab.
Billing is annual only. The page says so. Extra attachment storage costs $0.33 per GB per month beyond the included 5 GB.
4. Create a collection, then invite people
Collections work like shared folders. Bitwarden recommends this order: create a collection, invite users, then share items. A sensible start is one collection for the wifi, streaming and utilities logins, and personal vaults for everything else.
To invite, open the Admin Console from the product switcher, go to Members and select Invite member. Enter emails, pick a role, assign collections, save.
5. Confirm each member
Invitees open the email and log in or create an account. Then you go back to Members, select everyone marked Accepted and choose Confirm selected. Check that the fingerprint phrase on screen matches the one the member sees under Settings, then My account.
Invites expire after five days. Relatives are slow to read email. Use Resend invitations when it happens.
Emergency access
Families includes it. You name a trusted contact and choose view or takeover. Takeover lets them set a new master password on your account. You set a wait time, and the contact's request is granted when it runs out unless you reject it first.
What it costs against the rivals
1Password's pricing page lists Families at $5.99 a month, or $4.49 on a first-year promo for new customers, for 5 people (checked Nov 1, 2026). Our best password managers roundup ranks the field. Bitwarden's $3.99 a month covers 6. Details are on the Bitwarden page, and the head-to-head with 1Password covers the rest. Our Bitwarden review has the free plan limits.
